After catastrophic earthquakes, a tsunami, and a potential nuclear meltdown, people are anxious to exit Japan. With airports recently reopening, charter jet companies are experiencing a rise in inquiries and sales, as people make plans to flee the destruction at any cost.

By detouring flights and reducing air traffic to the nation, commercial airlines are making matters more difficult. United Airlines, the most flown airline in the United States, has already eliminated 10% of their planned flights in April and proposes to increase that to 14% in May. Delta Airlines is also making preparations to lessen their flights to and from of Japan by 20% before May. They state that the cuts are because of the decrease in air traffic arriving and departing out of Japan, but as the country fights to recover from their recent tragedies, this could cause hostility as they reopen airports and begin to allow for more air travel in the near future.

The first floor of the Sendai International Airport was flooded and fires were ignited in the car ports and hangars trapping most of the passengers and staff on the upper floors when a tidal wave hit the northeast coast of Japan during the tsunami on March 11th. Others had to escape to the roof in other areas of the facility for 48 hours before rescuers arrived. Approximately 28,000 people have been reported dead or missing as vehicles, aircraft and even houses were washed across the runway during the destruction.

With the aid of the US air force, the airport is slated to reopen in three weeks. Foreigners and nationals alike are eager to leave the area and relocate or join loved ones in other parts of the world in order to flee the turmoil and start to rebuild their lives. Travel preparations are even more complicated to confirm for the survivors of this ordeal with airlines limiting their flights to Sendai International, and other Japanese airports.
